ABOUT PRIMITIVE ARROWS MADE BY D.C. WALDORF In the mid 70’s to mid 1980s I made a large number of primitive arrows that were sold separately through our catalog and along with the bows I made that went into elaborate quiver and bow case sets made by Val. I stopped making the bows a long time ago, but still had some shafts and feathers left for a limited number of arrows I am now offering on this site until they are gone. The shafts are milled dowels. The fletching may be wild or domestic turkey, or Canada goose feathers shed by local geese. The lashings are split electrician’s binding cord which is a good substitute for animal sinew, and the glue used is plastic model cement. These are far more durable and weatherproof than the natural materials. The heads are of various flints and of two basic types, corner notch, or side notch triangular type. Woodland and Mississippian arrows are about 27 inches long with no “lightning groves”. The Plains arrows are about 24 inches long and have lightning groves cut from the fletching to the heads, three in number, and equally spaced around the shaft. These grooves are colored red along with the black and red crests under the feathers. Because of these grooves Plains arrows are priced $5 higher. Even though these arrows are functional and guys have killed deer with longer, heavier arrows I made especially for that purpose, here it will be assumed these will be used for display only. They are initialed, have a year date, and serial number matching that of the flint head.
